Daniela Sanchez

Daniela Sanchez is completing her Master’s Degree in Gender Studies at El Colegio de México. She holds a BA in Sociology and a BA in Communication and Digital Media. Her dissertation “The Social Construction of Sexual Deviancy: Bondage, Discipline and Sadomasoquism in Mexico City” explored the social and historical construction of deviant sexuality and how different practices have been categorized as such. She conducted research on a BDSM community, with regards to the socio-demographic profile of participants and the corporeal and social ways through which they acquire the necessary knowledge to participate in the BDSM scene. Throughout her research she argued that sexual practices considered deviant can be better understood from a sociological, not pathologizing perspective.

Her current research focuses on analyzing how the experience of pain is deeply gendered. Outside of academia, Daniela directed a short documentary film about Saint Death, a stigmatized religious cult popular in the marginalized areas of Mexico City.

As an intern for the Centre for Sensory Studies she participated in and helped with the organization of the Uncommon Senses II conference, conducted independent research, and discussed drafts of her writing with Dr. David Howes for future publication.
