Lecture 5:

Engaging the Inquisitive Customer: Developing Layered Experiences at the Ontario Science Centre

Karen Hager is the Director, Science Engagement for the Ontario Science Centre. She is responsible for the development and delivery of all science engagement initiatives and public programs for the organization. Karen came to the Ontario Science Centre after eight years in the corporate events world, and fourteen years in the Canadian music industry. Her work in these two fields helped Karen develop both her tactical skills as well as her desire to set strategic direction for her team. Recently added to her portfolio is the responsibility for Community Engagement initiatives – that is, bringing the science centre “outside the walls” and into the community. Since arriving at the Ontario Science Centre, Karen has brought new ideas and innovative thinking to the science engagement offerings, including Sci Fri (a teen- focused free program), Creative Science Sundays and 2009’s extended program called FOOD: Sink Your Teeth Into Science. Karen has participated as a presenter and attendee at a number of conferences since her start at the Ontario Science Centre and continues to ‘push the envelope’ past traditional thinking in order to bring new opportunities to the visitor.
